Torquay United soon stamped some authority on events at Gigg Lane. Mustapha Carayol, Nicky Wroe and Elliot Benyon had chances on the home goal.
On 37 minutes, Chris Robertson's right wing cross was met by Carayol. Carayol's shot was blocked but he was on hand to net the rebound in front of South Devon's travelling faithful.
Lee Mansell and Mark Ellis threatened Bury's goal after the break. Michael Poke struggled with an injury for the final 30 minutes but Torquay's defence dealt well with some heavy Bury pressure.
On 87 minutes, Wroe’s pass sent Danny Stevens away to shoot United's second goal. Bury were in disarray and in injury time, Stevens laid the ball back for Scott Rendell to send in a low shot to make it 3 – 0.
